Resume - Meet Daniel Larusso, a mild-mannered New Jersey teenager who has to move from his native state to Los Angeles, California when his mother was offered a job there. He thought that he was going to have a nice house with a pool, then he finds out that his new home is a crummy apartment. He tries to fit into the Californian crowd, what he finds is a nice girl from his new high school, and punks (of a karate school named the Cobra Kai) who want to make his life miserable. Then, a Japanese handyman named Keusuke Miyagi comes to aid Daniel. He asked Miyagi to teach him karate, which he does (in a roundabout way). Daniel and Miyagi then developed a great relationship and he wanted to teach the karate fighting punks a lesson, so he signs up for a karate tournament. Daniel is determined to win

I saw this movie scheduled for an evening showing on Turner Classics last night and something compelled me to watch it even though I saw it when it first came out and still pretty much remembered the story. It seems a lot more simplistic now compared to what might be produced today, probably due to the fact that I'm twenty five years older now, and one's problems rarely get solved as effectively in two months time as they do here. But that shouldn't be read as a negative, I think there's some value in the story's themes of persistence and honor, and staying true to your goal even when that's a scary prospect.
I think the picture would have worked with any young actor in the Danny LaRusso role, but the presence of Pat Morita in the picture was an inspired decision. Known primarily as the second Arnold from the 'Happy Days' TV series, Morita brings a solid presence to the story as the wise and benevolent father figure for Ralph Macchio's character. Blending humor with martial arts, the picture subtly explores the importance of repetition and discipline for developing control and power. It pays off in the tournament finale when Danny gains the Valley Championship along with his self respect.
I know many will find fault with the idea that Danny could actually beat a competitor who has trained for many years, but that's not the point. If you're going to have a movie where the underdog overcomes his challenges and grows as a person, you wind up with a product like "The Karate Kid. A more realistic film would have Danny get his butt kicked in the championship round, but then you have a story without a moral, and who wants to see that.

These S. O. B. s need to be brought up on charges of harassment, assault, and extortion, and thrown behind bars. Or commit suicide out of humiliation. Or see the error of their ways and turn a new leaf. Or something! But at the end of 'The Karate Kid Part III', Kreese, Mr. Silver and Mike "Bad Boy of Karate" Barnes are free to continue their campaign of mental cruelty and diabolical revenge on Daniel and Mr. Miyagi. It's like if 'Casino Royale' ended on James Bond winning his card game and completely forgot about the rest of his spy mission. An added star for the high production values which were hilariously applied to a script more worthy of cheaper flicks like 'Best of the Best III' or 'Kickboxer 2, ' as well as Sean Kannan's wonderful delivery of the lines "I need your title... I don't think you heard me, I NEED your title! ", line readings which deserved multiple Oscar nominations on their own.
